LCG WAGE

About Us

The LCG Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) Group focuses on advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh through coordinated actions and policy support. It facilitates collaboration between government bodies and development partners to address key issues such as child marriage, online harassment, and gender-based violence. The group also aligns its efforts with national plans, like the 8th Five-Year Plan, and ensures progress through regular updates and evaluations.

The objective of the WAGE Working Group is to contribute towards effective and coordinated implementation of national policies, strategies, plans and programs in Women and Gender Equality.

Profile of the Co-Chair

Gitanjali Singh is the UN Women Representative in Bangladesh effective July 2022.

An Indian national, Ms. Singh brings over twenty years of experience in the field of women’s human rights and gender equality with expertise on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), across the development-humanitarian continuum. Prior to her assignment to Bangladesh, she served as the Deputy Country Representative and Head of Office a.i. of the UN Women Nepal Country Office. She has been with UNIFEM and UN Women since 1998, serving in the South Asia Regional Office including as the focal point for Bhutan and Maldives.

She holds a master’s degree in applied psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology from Delhi University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lady Sriram College in India.

Profile of the Co-Chair

Ms. Belien Tadesse joined USAID/Bangladesh as the Program Office Director in August 2023. She brings over two decades of experience with USAID and various institutions across Africa, South Asia, and the United States.

What We Do

Scope of Work

  1. To facilitate common understanding on the country’s gender equality and women and girl’s empowerment issues.To act as a platform for identification of emerging and key issues for debates, and strategic direction. Facilitate common understanding and integration of policies, approaches and efforts of development partners across sectors; including maintaining a database on GoB and donor activities with regular updates.
  2. To review and advocate for national policy issues, international commitments on gender equality, and support the reporting, monitoring and implementation of CEDAW including all national and international commitments (8th FYP, the various NAPs on WDP, EVAW, ECM, ICPD, Beijing, UPR, SDGs).
  3. To promote harmonisation and alignment of activities as well as joint work/programmes, analyses to enhance aid effectiveness, avoid duplication and encourage complementarity in programming. Provide technical support to the GoB as required. The WG will prepare an annual plan, tentative agenda and year-end summary and present those to the LCG ExCom or Plenary, as appropriate.
  4. To support communication and dissemination of best practices in operational approaches/ practices with demonstrable, measurable and effective impact.
  5. To ensure mutual monitoringand accountabilitywith GoB and amongst DPs engaged in gender related sectoral programmes of in addition GoB’s implementation and appropriate allocation of resources for gender programming within sectors within the next 8th FYP.
  6. To coordinate with other relevant LCG working groups.
  7. Provide a forum for information exchange and coordination for the government and development partners including targets, achievements, challenges, activities, and new initiatives.
