About Us

The Ministry of Water Resources is responsible for the regulation of rivers and river valleys of the country. It includes all matters relating to equitable, integrated and sustainable development of irrigation system, flood forecasting and warning, flood control and protection of river erosion, determination of causes of floods and damage caused by floods to irrigation projects, embankments, etc. The major development works include river bank protection work with CC blocks, irrigation canal excavation thus enhancing agricultural productivity, construction of reservoirs, land reclamation, estuary control etc.

Goal

Our Objective

The main objective of this working group is to act as a platform for policy dialogue and contribute towards effective and coordinated implementation of policies, strategies, plans and programmes relating to water resources management and materializing the vision laid down in Delta Plan-2100 through joint result targets and a shared monitoring framework. The newest chapter in Water Resource Management in the country is to implement the Delta Plan 2100.

Profile of the Chair

Mr. Nazmul Ahsan joined the Ministry of Water Resources as Secretary on December 15, 2022. Before joining this ministry, he served as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla). He was born into a distinguished Muslim family in Missionpara, Narayanganj District. His father was the late Kofil Uddin Ahmed and his mother is Rokeya Begum. He passed his SSC from Narayanganj High School and HSC from Dhaka College, and earned his Bachelor’s (Honors) and Master’s degrees in Physics from the University of Dhaka.

Mr. Nazmul Ahsan joined the 13th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre on April 25, 1994, and worked with dedication and diligence at various levels of field administration. He served as an Assistant Commissioner at the Deputy Commissioner’s offices in Brahmanbaria and Bandarban Hill Districts, and as Assistant Commissioner (Land) in Gosairhat Upazila of Shariatpur District, Netrakona Sadar, and Monohardi Upazila of Narsingdi District. He also worked as the Nezarat Deputy Collector (NDC) in Comilla District.

What We Do

Scope of Work

  1. Coordinate work within the sector and act as a moderator and facilitator for work ongoing in the sector of water resources management;
  2. Promote harmonization and alignment of activities as well as joint work/programme, analyses to enhance aid effectiveness, avoid duplication, encourage complementarity in programming, and monitor achievements in respective fields;
  3. Provide feedback to the Government and LCG Plenary on progress in the achievements of targets outlined in the results framework and also identify restraints in achieving those targets;
  4. Review national policy issues relating to water resources and delta management and extend cooperation in effective implementation;
  5. Promote and facilitate common intentions and integration of policies, approaches and efforts of Government and Development Partners;
  6. Provide a forum for information exchange and coordination for the Government and Development Partners including targets, achievements, challenges, activities and new initiatives; ·
  7. Conduct joint fact-finding, field review or evaluation missions/task forces to assess the challenges to water resources and delta management and recommend Government accordingly;
  8. Integrate key cross-cutting issues and coordinate on these issues with working groups;
  9. Support communication and dissemination of best practice in operational approaches/practices with demonstrable, measurable and effective impact;
  10. Support the strengthening and effectiveness of the Bangladesh delegation to Conferences of the Parties (COPs):
  11. Provide regular feedback to the LCG plenary and provide biannually an update on progress and constraints in the achievements of goals set by GOB in the sector, area or theme;
